The project consisted of the complete demolition of both levels of the interior of the existing library and an 8,200 square foot, two-story addition to the facility, and a single story addition. During the renovation, the HVAC system was replaced in the entire building, structural repairs were made to the existing roof system, and the interior was demolished down to the existing structure and new interior finishes installed. The newly renovated facility includes the non-fiction, fiction, stacks, audio/video catalog, reference law library, temporary public computer workstations, children’s area with story-telling room, workroom, study rooms, circulation desk, offices, and staff lounge. The lower level includes a large meeting room with AV and foldable partition wall, storage rooms, café, public computer workstations, training/classroom, director’s office, work area, technical services, board room, Friends of the Library meeting room, and file storage.
The project team was required to renovate this facility while library operations continued, keeping the facility open to the public. This was accomplished by early collaboration among the entire project team. During the schematic design phase, the Owner, end user, Architect, and Reeves Young team conducted several planning meetings to determine a specific timeline logistics plan. The final plan implemented included the preparation of the lower level of the library and ultimately the entire library collection and operations temporarily moving into the lower level for several months. While the library operations were located on this level, Reeves Young constructed the two additions and completely renovated the existing main level. Upon completion of the main level, the collection and staff were moved back onto the main level, clearing out the lower level allowing our project team to tie the two lower portions of the expansions into the existing facility and renovated the lower floor. Through careful planning and execution of our logistics plan, this public library facility remained open to the public throughout the project.
