Intern Expo 2019

The Second Annual Intern Expo took place on Thursday, July 18 from 1 to 3 p.m. in the HUB, or Reeves Young training room. The expo is an opportunity for our 19 interns to share their internship experience with both peers and Reeves Young employees. Each intern was stationed at a table along with their presentation board for Reeves Young employees to view the presentation, discuss project(s), and ask questions. This not only allows our interns to reflect on their great accomplishments from the summer, but also serves as a way to assess the overall internship experience for the enhancement of our program.

At Reeves Young, our interns are valuable employees, and we commend them for putting time and hard work into their internships and presentations. After interns were assessed by their colleagues on their content, subject knowledge, communication skills, and creativeness, our three voted winners this year are…

1st Place –Lindsey Adams, Preconstruction

2nd Place –Parker Everson, Marketing

3rd Place –Brendan McCormack, Water Resources

Thank you to our Summer 2019 Interns! We are so incredibly proud of your hard work and accomplishments. If this sounds fun, join us next summer –apply online at https://reevesyoung.wpengine.com/careers/internship/.

A Day in the Life: Preconstruction Manager

Charlie Whiting has been with Reeves Young since 2011 and is currently a Preconstruction + Program Manager. However, he did not follow a straight path to get to this point. Whiting worked solely in Preconstruction from 2011-2016. Then, he moved out into the field as an Assistant Project Manager and an Owner’s Representative (or Program Manager) after transferring from the commercial side of the firm when it was known as Potts. An owner’s repworks on behalf of the developer to manage the design team and theGeneral Contractor. Whiting was the owner’s rep for the Hyatt House in Nashville. However, over time he slowly phased out of this role and found his way back to preconstruction.

Right now, Whiting is currently working on the City Hall Complex in Conyers, GA (a special project since this is his hometown), two hotel towers for the Atlantic Station Dual Brand project, the Hyatt Centric at Lenox Mall, the Chamblee Police Headquarters, and the Hyatt Place project in Atlanta.

One thing that we regularly hear around the office is preconstruction employees calling subcontractors. But, what does that mean exactly? Reeves Young subcontracts various project work, such as flooring and electricity, to other firms. For example, we willsubcontract a group to pour concrete for us instead of pouring it ourselves since we do not necessarily have the necessary equipment in-house to do so. Not only does this allow us to get the project done faster, but it also helps with the pricing aspect of the preconstruction process.

Whiting enjoys working at Reeves Young for its high energy, project exposure, and fast pace. However, Whiting stated that what really sets Reeves Young apart from other contractor’s is that it is a really fun place to work.“Everybody works hard and has a ton of stuff to do in this industry, but Reeves Young has found good people to do it with by identifying what our culture is and trying to foster that in our environment as we continue to bring on new members,” exclaimed Whiting.

Project Site Spotlight: Hyatt Place Centennial Olympic Park

This commercial project is located in the heart of Downtown Atlanta off Luckie Street. It is within walking distance to Centennial Olympic Park, the Georgia Aquarium, and theMercedes-Benz Stadium. Let’s check out some of the highlights from our visit below:

The Hyatt is going to be an 182,000 SF hotel, offer over 150 rooms on 11 different floors, feature an elevated pool, fitness center, and lobby with full bar & food service, 2,500 SF of meeting space, retail, and provide over 90 parking spaces. Third Annual Intern Outing 2019

On June 21, 2019, all Reeves Young interns and supervisors were invited to attend this year’s Third Annual Intern Outing at Top Golf, a driving range in Alpharetta, Ga.

Upon arrival, employees were greeted and directed through the lobby onto the second level. There, Reeves Young had reserved seven driving lanes and provided complimentary food and drinks for all who attended. The menu included everything from chicken and ribs to mac n’ cheese and biscuits. Of course, cookies were provided at the end of the buffet line too. It was delicious!

After everyone had eaten, the friendly competitions began. Some people focused on technique while others turned their attention toward the far net for distance practice and played games with the accompanied TV screen.

Technique

Although golf looks simple, there are elements of precision and timing that are often overlooked in a swing. Ultimately, the goal of every golfer is to drive distance and accuracy. But, how does one do that? Here are a few things to keep in mind before you head over to the range:

1.Determine the best grip according to preference

2.Widen your stance

3.Practice good posture

4.Turn your head in the back swing

5.Keep your left arm straight

6.Hold your finish

Overall, fun was had by all, lessons were taught to those less inclined to golf, and it was a beautiful day to celebrate our interns and the relationships we have built together. Our annual Intern Outing was another success and we are already looking forward to next year.

First Annual Bring Your Child to Work Day Luau

Reeves Young hosted our first annual Bring Your Child to Work Day Luau in the office on Friday, June 14. The day was filled with crafts, watching Moana, eating nautical nuggets, drawing chalk art, riding water slides, and more!

Our Human Resources department put their creativity to the test as they prepared for the upcoming fun. Over 30 employees brought their kiddos to work as we celebrated our families and the office we work in. Morgan Collette, Savannah Bell, and the rest of HR were able to transform the space into a tropical paradise. Everything from photo booths and painted pineapples to hula skirts and beach balls filled the space as our employees celebrated with friends and family.

The HR department was not the only one to get in on the fun though! The Marketing and Business Development team transformed their space into Club Sugar Rush, a Candy Bar open all day (for kids, that is)! With little time to spare, the team was able to collaborate, compile, and create a space just for kids on the day of the luau for a sweet escape.

The Candy Bar was decked out with streamers, a disco ball, names of all the kids on the walls, a playlist that could get any kid moving, Capri Sun, candy bags, and a 24-hour loop of Fortnite dances on the TV monitor. It was a blast and a memory the kids (and marketing department) will remember for a long time!

At the end of the day, the Reeves Young Family enjoyed the warm sun as kids rode down the water slide, decorated the sidewalks with original art, and tossed a football in the field. Everyone big and small had a blast and we are already looking forward to future Bring Your Child to Work Days to come!

The Reeves Young Fleet

Whether you have heard of Reeves Young for years or are just getting started, you are sure to spot one of our vehicles driving on the highways of Metro Atlanta.

All of our equipment is company-owned and comprises over 155 pieces of heavy machinery –the largest weighing in at 55 tons! Our fleet of white Ford F-150s sport a sleek shine and the Reeves Young logo on the front doors.

The F-150 fleet makes up 83 of our vehicles, but over 100 of our vehicles are on-road. In other words, these vehicles are not necessarily capable of driving on and off paved or gravel surfaces. However, some off-road vehicles that we utilize and do not travel on public streets or highways include forklifts, cranes, backhoes, and bulldozers. (Source: Wikipedia).

The average age of our equipment is 3.5 years, which means it’s practically new! We intend to maintain our equipment for as long as possible whetherthat is in the field or on the way to work!

Site Spotlight: The Phoenix at Braselton

The Phoenix at Braselton site is going to be a senior living community with independent living, assisted living, and memory care that will be completedwithin the next year.

This commercial project is off Friendship Road in Hoschton, Ga. Currently, there are more than 50 workers on the site, but once construction goes vertical there will be more than 100.

The buildings at Phoenix are considered hybrid, meaning they will be composed of concrete, wood vertical, masonry for the towers and elevators, metal framing, structural steel columns, beams, bar joints, and more.

While there, we spoke with Nick Turner, a Commercial Assistant Superintendent, who emphasized safety, quality, and scheduleas being prioritized on the site at all times.

Employees are expected to uphold safety standards, like being tied off 100 percent of the time and wearing seat belts, whether they are being directly managed or trusted to getthe job done. Also, everyone on the site wears a radio to improve communication and advance completion.

This safety attire is required on all project sites and should be seriously considered before going in the field. (Photo/Taylor Elliott, rymarketing@reevesyoung.com).

Upon completion, the site will feature two independent living buildings to the east and west with parking garages below, assisted living, memory care, a courtyard, and a pool amenity toward theback of the property. Rent for future residents will start at $4 thousand a room.

Although this is a construction site, professionalism and morale are maintained at all times. “It is important that our workers are kept in high spirits because they work long hours in demanding climates,” said Turner. “We value our crew and the hard work they put in… it definitely does not go unnoticed.”

Welcome to the Team, Summer 2019 Interns!

It is officially summer time! For some, this means laying by the pool and reading a good book, but for others, it means gaining life experience and building professional relationships in the workplace.

This group of nineteen individuals have dedicated their summer plans to gaining valuable life experience and building relationships with professionals in the construction industry. They come from all over to do this too –The University of Florida, Purdue University, Clemson University, Auburn University, Kennesaw State University, The University of Georgia, Georgia Southern, local high schools, and more. They will be joining us in the Heavy Civil, Commercial, and Water Resource Business Units as well as in Preconstruction, Human Resources, Accounting, Safety, Marketing, and Business Development.

Meet Some of Our Interns

BRENNAN SMALL, HEAVY CIVIL BUSINESS UNIT

“My responsibilities this summer are to work on pay apps for the City of Atlanta as well as create as-builts for completed projects in the city. I interned with Reeves Young last summer and really enjoyed my time here which is why I chose to come back. I learned a great deal about project management and some of the daily tasks a project manager accomplishes. I came back this summer because I wanted to learn more about the tasks performed as well as continue to grow off of what I learned last year. I also love the atmosphere around the office and am very appreciative of how helpful everyone is.”

TUCKER TRAPP, HYATT PLACE CENTENNIAL OLYMPIC PARK

“I am in charge of developing meeting minutes, reviewing close-out documentation, coordinating the finishes for the lobby area, and assisting in any other way that I can. I chose Reeves Young because of how they treat their employees. In such a tight-scheduled, business-minded field, it would be easy to disregard your employees and keep your focus on making the extra dollar. However, with RY, Kevin Smith treated me with the utmost respect without even knowing me on the first day. They are also continually doing things for the community, their field workers, and their families. This summer, I hope to gain some valuable experience working with both the office and on site. My hope is that I will be able to split up my time and learn a little bit from each side. Coming off of three office internships, I believe it is important that I spend some time in the field before beginning my career in December!”

LINDSEY ADAMS, PRECONSTRUCTION

“Precon has a lot of responsibilities, but my main focus is to perform takeoffs and talk to subcontractors about pricing. I chose Reeves Young becauseI really enjoyed working with them last year in the Project Management Department doing commercial construction. I love how everyone works together here. RY could not accomplish what it has if it did not have such a great team. I also love that the peoplewho work here want to teach and ensure you are not lost along the way. This summer, I hope to learn more about the construction industry in general. I hope that I will get to use what I have learned in school this summer on-the-job and also apply what I learn from this internship to my future classes.”

PARKER EVERSON, MARKETING & BUSINESS DEVELOPMENT

“As a marketing intern at Reeves Young, I do a lot of market research, assembling hardcover books for bids, and updating the Pipeline, which is an Excel document that organizes all of the potential work for RY. This summer, I hope to determine which area of business I want to study and what major will relate to that when I apply for college next year.”

AASHKA PATEL, HUMAN RESOURCES

“With my interest in the business-management field, I saw interning at Reeves Young as an amazing opportunity to not only gain experience, but to also see firsthand how a successful company functions. Reeves Young always places high value on their employees and encourages me to learn, grow, and innovate daily. I look forward to understanding the corporate world in a manner that goes beyond the classroom. With college approaching, I hope to strengthen my background in this area, allowing me to excel as a student and a future professional in this industry.”
